hard week

i haven't blogged in awhile. i just haven't had anything to say. but this has been a hard couple of weeks and i wanted to write about it to help me process what has been going on.

first of all, DP and i made a fundamental and monumental mistake and we are in the process of trying to fix it which is terrifying and anxiety causing.

second, the coordinator of my special education program came into my classroom and basically told me that everything that i am doing is wrong. she was kind and gave me some new ideas. but she also put a great deal of pressure on me to improve the levels of my students (which is my job, i understand that) in a short period of time. she made me feel like i am a terrible teacher and that i have no idea what i am doing. she made me feel like shit to be blunt. and i am left feeling weepy and helpless.

third, i have started a program called pcos diva jumpstart (www.pcosdiva.com) in which i have been instructed to make many changes to my diet and lifestyle. this all or nothing approach, going cold turkey and diving in to a lifestyle change has been really difficult and i feel like a failure.

the eating part has been fairly easy. it's not the first time i have eaten this way, so i know what foods to eat and what foods to avoid. i had already cut out caffeine, so i am not having withdrawals.

in terms of my diet, i am not eating:

  • wheat
  • gluten
  • sugar
  • caffeine
  • dairy
  • red meat
i am also taking a number of supplements. easy peasy.

the challenge for me is the lifestyle change. i am supposed to get up early each morning and do some sort of exercise. i have yet to manage to get out of bed early enough to do anything except make a smoothie. some mornings i have had to drink the smoothie in the car on the way to work. i am not acting at all like a diva and am not taking care of myself.

i feel like the world is crushing me. like there is a huge weight pushing me down. like i am walking through molasses, unable to lift my feet.

i have been doing well with my depression. managing it with medication and therapy. the sadness and constant weepiness is back. but i think that i have legitimate things to feel weepy about. it's hard to tell the difference between a bad day and depression sometimes. and it's scary to think that i could go back to that dark place that i was in last year at this time; off work, cocooned on the couch, crying every day, not wanting to be alive.

i want more than anything to be able to get out of bed in the mornings and practice healthy living. it isn't that i don't have the motivation - i WANT to do it. but something is keeping me in bed. something is keeping me from succeeding. i think it is my fear of failure. if i don't try, then i can't fail.

so ... this has been a hard couple of weeks. and i feel like next week will be hard too.

i feel scared, helpless, and stuck.

i need encouragement.

be kind to yourself,

xoxo

what i learned from pokey sue

pokey sue is my acupuncturist. i hate acupuncture. i hate needles. but i love the feeling of being the centre of attention and care for an hour. and i love the balance i feel after treatment.

i wanted to write about the lessons i have learned from pokey sue over the last 3 years ...

1. you wouldn't eat garbage, so why would you listen to people who speak garbage? why would you take in their words? learn to separate the garbage from the healthy words and take in only those words that are good for you.

2. if you cut a quince and take out the seeds, and soak the seeds in water overnight, and then drink the goo that forms, it will coat your sore throat ... it also tastes like goo and makes you gag, but that's beside the point ... (http://aprilgigiangels.blogspot.ca/2011/10/adventures-in-quinces.html)

3. celery can be put in the blender, drained, and drunk, helping to lower your blood sugar. it also tastes like crap. which is surprising because i love celery. but i don't like it as a drink. as a drink it is very nasty.

4. lemon trees are hard to grow. (http://aprilgigiangels.blogspot.ca/2014/02/pokey-sues-plant-predicament.html)

5. truth can set you free and break a million hearts at once.

6. willpower comes from hope. and when you lose hope, you lose your willpower.

7. focusing on the positives are important.

8. everyday, wake up and tell yourself that you are worthy and deserving.

9. there are people in this world who care so much about other people that they devote their career to caring for them - even if that means stabbing them with needles.

10. plants have similar reactions to lie detectors that humans do. plants have been shown to react to negative and positive stimuli.

11. stick tea shrinks cysts.

12. love is the most important emotion.

13. different parts of your body have different times that they are ... i dunno, active?

14. people come in and out of your life at different times to teach you things. some people can really touch your life without them even knowing it.

what lessons have you been taught?

be kind to yourself,

owning your feelings

it's easy for us to admit and own our kindness, our happiness, our helpfulness. but LES suggested i write about owning our anger, our frustration, and those emotions that we think of as "bad." to own your feelings means to admit that you have those feelings, to accept the feeling, to feel it, and to express it in a healthy way.

“We think too much and feel too little.”
― Charles Chaplin

i have written before about there being no such thing as good or bad emotions, there are just emotions. and they ebb and flow. and they are all okay.

but how do we actually own those emotions that we try hard to pretend that we don't have: jealousy, rage, frustration, anger, disappointment ...

... as a child, my family didn't talk about emotions. but if i expressed any of those "bad" emotions, i was taught to bury it and be a good girl. good girls don't get angry. good girls aren't jealous or disappointed. good girls smile and accept what life hands them.

“Emotions come and go and can't be controlled so there's no reason to worry about them. That in the end, people should be judged by their actions since in the end it was actions that defined everyone.”
― Nicholas Sparks

in my life, i have faced experiences that have left me feeling lonely, and empty, and i didn't know how to handle those feelings because i was taught to suck it up and be good.

“Many of us spend our whole lives running from feeling with the mistaken belief that you can not bear the pain. But you have already borne the pain. What you have not done is feel all you are beyond that pain.”
― Khalil Gibran

good girls don't express their feelings, they hold them in.

i have been thinking a lot about loss lately and my reactions to the losses i have faced in life.

i shut down years ago and found ways to numb myself from the pain of loss. one of those ways was food, another was sedatives, and another was to shut down part of my heart to protect myself from further loss.

had i been taught how to own my emotions and to express them in healthy ways, i think my life would have been very different.

now, i blog. blogging is how i sort out my thoughts and my feelings.

“Never apologize for showing your feelings. When you do, you are apologizing for the truth.”
― José N. Harris

so how do we own our emotions? what can we DO with those emotions that scare us?

yell
sing
run
walk
jump
scream
do yoga
breathe
mediate
talk
write
call a friend
listen to music
make music
draw
sculpt
cry
take a bath

find something to do that makes you feel good. allow yourself to feel the emotion. there is nothing wrong with feeling. there is nothing wrong with being jealous, angry, hurt, disappointed ... there is nothing wrong with feelings.

how we act upon our feelings is a whole other story. i am not suggesting you take out your rage on someone else. that isn't healthy. neither is it healthy to take out your rage on yourself. and yet, it is okay to FEEL rage and to express yourself in healthy safe ways. through writing, for example. and then tearing up your writing.

the truth is ... i am telling myself this as much as i am telling you.

be kind to yourself,

xoxo

emotional harm reduction

harm reduction is a set of principles used in addiction support. it is strategies for supporting people, in whatever stage of their drug use, to make their use safer.

today LES suggested i write about emotional harm reduction and what that means to me. for example, if you have a list of things to do and you feel completely paralyzed, picking one thing and focusing on that and doing that one thing can make it easier to accomplish something.

i thought a lot today about harm reduction and how it could be applied to emotions and to our responses to emotions. and i decided that i would write 8 principles of emotional harm reduction, based on the principles of harm reduction as it relates to substance abuse.

1. accept that emotions are part of everyone's daily lives and that it is better to minimize the harmful effects of our responses to emotions than to ignore or suppress these emotions: each day we have various emotions flow through us. the emotions themselves are harmless, but can cause duress. we need to find ways to minimize our harmful reactions to the emotions that we feel. for example, when you are feeling overwhelmed your response to that feeling can often be to do something harmful to yourself instead of self-care; i.e. choosing to do something soothing and calming like taking a bath/shower, making some tea, taking some deep breaths, playing an instrument, going for a walk etc.

2. emotions can elicit all sorts of responses in individuals, and some responses are more appropriate than others. it is important to acknowledge that there are healthy and unhealthy ways to deal with our emotions: unhealthy ways to deal with emotions include self-harm or harming someone else, purging, suppressing, or taking it out on someone else. healthy ways include practicing self-care, talking to a safe person, or even meditating ... it's okay to stop and take care of yourself when you are experiencing an emotion that feels "too much."

3. successful intervention of our own responses to our emotions involve creating safe ways to express emotions, not ceasing to have emotions altogether: learning to allow myself to have emotions and to find ways to say to someone "i feel ..." has been the most challenging and also most rewarding and liberating experience of my life. for me, a safe way to express my emotions has been in writing (either this blog, emails, texts, and even facebook chats) and also in therapy. being able to express emotions safely makes experiencing emotions more comfortable (or bearable).

4. finding ways to work with supportive people to explore our emotions in a way that reduces our negative reactions to these emotions: therapy. good friends. compassionate and loving people. finding a support system.

5. empower ourselves to be the ones to understand our emotions and to know what we need: only you can know what you are feeling and what you need. only you can know whether or not meditation is right for you. getting suggestions from people is fine, but only you can know WHAT will work for you and what wont. you need to be empowered to be able to stand up for your needs.

6. recognize that social inequities, personal identities, past trauma, and our vulnerability affect our capacity to effectively deal with our emotions and how we react to having them: we all have a past. we all have things in our life that have made us who we are. and some of us have not learned how to react to having emotions that throw us into a tailspin. it's okay to ask for help. it's okay to admit that you don't know how to react in a safe and supportive way to your own emotions. and it is okay to seek help.

7. do not minimize or ignore the potential harm that we can cause to ourselves based on our reactions to our sometimes difficult emotions: self-harm or harming someone else, purging, suppressing, or taking it out on someone else, can all be dangerous reactions to difficult emotions. it is important to recognize that this is true, so that we can create ways to safely and healthfully deal with our emotions.

8. ensure that our own voices are heard when we seek help to understand our emotions: if you have taken the step to go to therapy, and you don't feel heard, then find a new therapist. seriously. i am not making light of a serious situation. i have been in various therapeutic settings over the last 17 years and only in the last year and a half have i been in a setting where my voice is heard. you are the only person who knows how you are feeling. your voice matters. (click here for my post on why i support the experience of going to therapy)

so what does this mean when we are dealing with our emotions? sometimes fear and anxiety can rule our lives. we are afraid to try things, afraid to put ourselves out there, afraid to be vulnerable. sometimes showing up is the most that we can do. LES said, "... you can do nothing for fear of failure or you can try, and see what happens ... time is going to pass anyways ..."

for 30 years, i suppressed my emotions. i found ways to numb myself so that i didn't have to feel anger, hurt, sadness, longing, loneliness, despair, fear ... i found ways to push those emotions aside ... and to not FEEL anything.

but in doing so, i made it impossible to feel joy, bliss, happiness, excitement, pleasure ...

as i explore my own emotions, i am learning ways to "handle" my feelings. i am learning ways to feel the emotions without having a total and complete breakdown every time a feeling passes through me. it isn't easy. Nosy Nora says, "it sucks," and it does. but feeling is so much better than not feeling ... believe me.

as always ...

be kind to yourself,

Reflecting, Renewing, Rejoicing

pausing to notice ...

“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” ― Søren Kierkegaard

Reflection

A little reflection will show us that every belief, even the simplest and most fundamental, goes beyond experience when regarded as a guide to our actions.William Kingdon Clifford

this is a month of reflection for me. looking back, not just on the last 2 years of ttc, but also looking back at the last 35 years. listening to the voice in my head. sometimes the voice isn't nice. sometimes she is a bully. a mean girl.

i have been trying to listen to the voice in my head and hear what she is saying; it's hard to listen without believing her. it's hard to hear what she is saying without believing her. she can be really mean. she judges me, and my choices, harshly.

but it's important to listen to her in order to hear what she is saying so that i can figure out why she is saying it. where do my messages come from? where did i learn the things that i have learned?

lessons from the voice in my head:

  1. never tell anyone when you are hurt. keep it to yourself.
  2. never ask for help. find a way to manipulate the help that you need without coming right out and saying "i need help"
  3. if you eat one piece of chocolate, you have ruined everything, so you might as well eat the whole thing. and have a second because really? you messed up.
  4. if someone is mad at you, that means they are leaving you and they never want to be your friend again, so smooth it over as quickly as possible.

Your problem is you’re too busy holding onto your unworthiness.   – Ram Dass

Renewal
“Every single cell in the human body replaces itself over a period of seven years. That means there's not even the smallest part of you now that was part of you seven years ago.” ― Steven Hall, The Raw Shark Texts

it's a month of renewal. i have filled the fridge with fresh, locally grown, organic fruits and vegetables. i look forward to eating the fresh foods not only because of how good they taste, and how big the taste is, but because i know that it is good for me.

it makes my body feel good. it makes me feel good emotionally because it doesn't mess with my blood sugar or my hormone levels. but it also makes me feel good psychologically to know that i am making good choices.

today i bought a $7 loaf of bread.

Photo from Bunner's Website

that's nuts. or so i thought. but as i sat in the big red chair eating a slab of bread, still warm ... i decided i would have paid $14.

the bread is made from a blend of bean flours, which gives it extra fiber and protein. but it also has no dairy, no eggs, and no wheat. amazing. it tastes like a spongy white bread. (click here see the link under the photos to go to the Bunner's website if you live in toronto and want to visit this fantastic bakery)

on my kitchen counter right now there are two treats: a cinnamon bun and a vanilla cupcake - both of which are also made with no wheat, no eggs, and no dairy. vegan and gluten-free. sweetened with agave. i can't even begin to describe my excitement.

Photo from Bunner's Website

getting excited about food again is a wonderful feeling. knowing that the food tastes good, is good for me, and wont make me feel sick or sad or anxious or moody. it's an incredible feeling.

i took the time today to really experience the time at acupuncture. to feel the points the needles were in. to feel how my muscles feel. to feel the tension in my muscles. to try to relax the muscles - to release the tension. it feels like in that hour, i am renewing my energy for the week.

Rejoice

Be Content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.Lao Tzu

how do you rejoice when there is so much craziness and despair in the world around you? how do you face each day, knowing what is going on in the world? it isn't easy. i am a person who thinks a lot. a person who wonders. a person who ponders what everyone else in the world is doing. i think about my students. i think about my friends. i think about people in other countries. i think about everyone. so how do i take time to rejoice?

i am working on myself. on rejoicing in the small things in life that make me who i am - that make my life what it is.

Happiness is not a goal; it is a by-product.   – Eleanor Roosevelt

i savour the taste of the fresh, soft, warm bread. i slowly sip my once a day chai latte instead of gulping it down.

i revel in sitting in the livingroom making crochet flowers while BB unravels the wool for me.

i appreciate long car rides with BB, listening to music, looking at the sights around us, appreciating each other's company.

i am rejoicing in the smell of fresh cut grass, the taste of agave in my tea, the sounds of giggling children at the park. i am rejoicing in being with people who make me feel good, who make me feel worthy and valued and like i can be myself. i am rejoicing in seeing old friends, getting a hug, watching friends finish a giant bottle of wine, making plans to do things i wouldn't normally do -  like drive to strafford to see a show, or drive to barrie to see a half-price movie with my best friend, or sit at the coffee shop ACROSS from starbucks (*wink*).

i am rejoicing in thinking about going back to work. meeting my new students. seeing how the returning students have grown. hearing about their summer vacations. getting back into the routines.

i am rejoicing in knowing that soon i will go back to school shopping: the smell and feel of fresh new pencils, pencil crayons, erasers ....

in the midst of chaos, struggle, and major changes, there is good.

If you’re going through hell, keep going.   – Winston Churchill

through reflection, renewal, and rejoicing, the good in the world shines brightly.

my hope for you, whether you are ttc, or starting a new job, or dealing with the health of your family, my hope for you is that you can find the beauty in the day and focus your energy on the positive.

much love,

xoxo
