Birthday message

Today, I give myself a birthday message.

I am enough.
        I am worthy.
               I am deserving.

today, my 37th birthday, i wish my Self, happiness, serenity, and healing.

i give to myself the gift of being kind and compassionate, not only to others, but also to my Self.

i aim to embrace myself, as i am, waiting for my wings to grow.

be kind to yourself,

xoxo

Your life under a microscope

lately i have been obsessed with butterflies. this means that i notice them wherever i go. it also means that people point out butterflies to me when they see them. (See these previous posts re: butterflies: click here, click here, click hereclick here)
http://distractify.com/geek/butterflies-are-natures-gems-but-wait-until-you-see-what-their-wings-look-like-under-a-microscope/

today, SC sent me these photos of butterfly wings seen under a microscope. they are really cool. so i decided to share them here with my readers. aren't they gorgeous? i love science!

the photos made me think about how my life has been under a microscope lately. visiting with various doctors and specialists, my regular therapy appointments, debriefing all these appointments with my friends, and even writing this blog ...

... each part of my life is being questioned, discussed, examined.

i spend a great deal of time in my head, thinking about every little thing that has happened to me. looking at the tiny details. exploring what those details mean. while it is important, and enlightening ...

... it can feel very exposing to have your life under a microscope. each doctor wants to know the details. each doctor asks hard questions. questions that, through therapy, i have answers for, but don't know if i want to share these answers with a stranger. and other answers, i don't have yet and maybe never will.

each day i am faced with another memory from my life. another mean thing that was said to me. another mean thing that was done to me. another way that i was hurt, and wounded. another scar that i thought had healed. each day i examine my life under a microscope.

it's time to see the big picture ... to step back from examining every detail of your life.

my life is actually pretty awesome. i have a great job that i love. i have a fabulous partner, SC,  who loves me as deeply as i love her. i have an incredible group of friends who are actually there for me, in ways that i have never experienced before. i have people who care about me, and worry about me, and want me to be well and successful and happy. i have nosy nora in my corner, having my back. i have all those people loving me. i have a house to live in, food to eat, and i am relatively healthy.

depression and anxiety makes life feel challening. childhood events, memories, trauma ... they make life difficult as well. and those experiences are real, and hard. and at the same time, there are many things in my life right now that are wonderful.

find ways to "get out of your head" as AG likes to tell me. nosy nora says watch a funny show like "modern family." or, you could read a book, go for a walk, play games with friends, go for a coffee date, write, sing, play, talk, nap, and give yourself a break from the hard stuff. take time to enjoy the NOW stuff.

be kind to yourself,

ps ... tee hee hee ... a funny for your day ...

Truth grows wings

last night, my wings grew a little bit because i spoke my truth.

recently i have been dealing with what radical t calls "the childhood event." and as i work my way through this event, and my shame around it, i often wonder if i am just crazy, or if it was really my fault, or if i made the whole thing up in the first place.

so i decided to take a leap of faith, an impulsive one actually, and i emailed one of the people who was around during "the childhood event" and i asked some questions that i needed answers to.

i wasn't expecting a response. but i got one.

i spoke my truth. and i was validated. and heard. and the validation made my wings grow a little bit.

i feel lighter this morning. i feel unburdened

when i first met nosy nora, she used to say that it was like someone else was living my life; like i wasn't participating in my own life. i feel like it is MY life now.

sharing my story, speaking my truth, is freeing me from the heaviness that i carry around.

so i decided that i wanted to share another story with you. another truth. because speaking my story makes me strong each day.

this time it is about foxes.

The summer I was 17, I was dating a woman who was 21. It was new and exciting and confusing. I was in the woods writing in my journal and thinking about my life and feeling confused. And I looked up and there was a fox staring at me. And I just knew that it was going to be ok.

Then in grade 12, I was on the bus going to school and I was thinking about school and feeling confused and unsure about my education choices and if I should think about changing high schools ... and a fox trotted down Bloor street! And again, I just knew.

There were a few other significant sightings over those few years. But the most significant was in relation to my best friend Gigi (who this blog is named after).

I was at her house and I told
Gigi about the importance of foxes in my life. She teased me and said that squirrels were her special animal because she sees them all the time. I went home and as I walked in the door, the phone was ringing. It was Gigi. She said there was a fox in her backyard with a squirrel in its mouth.

We laughed and laughed.

And 2 days later,
Gigi died.

A week after her death, I was at her house in her sister's room. Her Dad was in
Gigi's room and he suddenly called out "hey, have you ever seen a fox?" Her sister knew the fox story so we looked at each other and our jaws dropped. We ran to the bedroom and her mom joined us there.

The 4 of us stood at the window, crying, holding each other and watching this fox who just sat in the yard staring back at us.

It was moving and healing and there are no words to describe it.

i continue to see foxes at significant moments in my life. most recently i saw a fully intact dead fox on the side of the road. i cried and cried and CRIED. and i emailed Gigi's sister and told her about it. her response was touching:

Maybe the penetrating gaze of that intact dead fox on the driver's side on the highway yesterday, was a mirror to you: not a message that doom and gloom awaits you, but that it's time for your soul to finally rise up from the damaged (metaphorical) carcass that houses it and become the most fully alive, most vibrant and whole vibrational entity that it can be. It's your time to become whole, Kira, that's what the dead fox symbolizes for me.

i like to think that she is right. that in order for me to morph into a butterfly from this diapause state that i am in, to become the most vibrant and whole entity that i can be, i need to continue to tell my story, to speak my truth, and to heal.

NOTE: please keep in mind that i am NOT endorsing the speaking of your own truth. i think that it's important to do it, but if you don't have a strong support system, then hold off. i only had the courage to do it, because i have a therapist, nosy nora, and because i know that i will have her support as i work through the aftermath of having my say - the aftermath of addressing "the childhood event" with a person who was there and who was able to validate me. if you have your own "childhood event" i strongly recommend you find yourself a therapist. if money is an issue, there are many affordable ways to access therapy in your city. toronto has several walk-in therapy clinics, as well as social workers and community agencies that offer free counseling. and i am sure there are some places in your own cities.

and if you are thinking about your "childhood event" and you need a distraction, DS suggests this sarcastic video called "Everything is Awesome" click here to watch.

be kind to yourself,

xoxo

waiting for my wings to grow ...

"it was during a time of painful conflict that i first began to experience myself as more than one. it was as though i sat in the midst of many selves." - Elizabeth O'Connor

i think that's what it must be like for a caterpillar who spins a cocoon. do they know that they are going to dissolve into "goo" and to stew in their many selves; caterpillar, butterfly, goo, cells, bits and pieces of their selves ... just waiting ...

lately, i have been encountering butterflies. whether it is on my mother-in-law's bookshelf, a photo in the living room at a B&B, a random sighting, a metaphor, a book, or in my own kitchen; butterflies just seem to find their way to me lately.

a gift from MD for my 18th birthday xoxo

KM met a woman who recommended a book to her called When the Heart Waits by Sue Monk Kidd. she read it and mentioned to me that it had butterfly and cocoon imagery and that she thought of me. KM then loaned the book to me.

it is the kind of book that i could read in one sitting, but i am making myself read it slowly in small pieces so that i can take it all in.

because the truth is, i think that Sue Monk Kidd (SMK) climbed into my head and wrote the book through me. her experience is my experience. which makes me feel so much less alone. maybe we all feel this way. maybe we all go through this.

"i too sat in the midst of many selves. the pleaser, the performer, the perfectionist - my trinity of p's. i was learning how these old roles were connected to another powerful role that i played out: the good little girl." -(SMK)

yes yes yes.

this.

this was me, my own trinity of p's haunting me from the pages of her book. i have been exploring the idea of myself being made up of many selves, and here it was written in ink, experienced by someone else: the powerful role of the good little girl (the GLG)

"my good little girl endured everything sweetly, feared coloring outside of the traditional lines, and frequently cut herself off from her real thoughts and feelings. she was well adapted to thinking other people's thoughts and following the path of least resistance." - SMK
yes yes yes and AGAIN yes. my own role as the GLG was learned very early in life. not wanting to cause ripples on the water, it became easier for me to follow the rules laid out for me. my path of least resistance meant finding ways to numb myself from my thoughts and feelings and my reactions to what was going on around me. my path of least resistance meant listening to what i was being told, taking in the messages from adults and peers, and learning at a very young age that i was fat, and ugly, and worthless, and that the best way to forge my way through the fire of life was to do what i was told, to never talk back, to follow all the rules, to be who i was expected to be ...

... now is the winter of my discontent (thanks shakespeare). not only because this winter seems colder, and snowier, and longer than recent winters. but because my role as the GLG is being questioned; is being turned on its head and being stewed in my own goo as i wait in my chrysalis exploring my many selves. is there such a thing as the Bad Little Girl (the BLG) ?  because that's who i was in secret. the GLG was my public self. my secret self rebelled by harming myself in multiple ways. my secret self broke rules that i knew wouldn't be noticed. was i the the BLG? or was i simply a little girl who wanted attention? who wanted to be loved?

i am in my chrysalis now, but without the deep longing and need to wrap myself in my duvet cocoon. i am in my chrysalis because i am being still and waiting. i am exploring my many selves and allowing myself to be spiritually reborn. no, SC, i won't be climbing into a bag and reenacting my birth. i promise! this isn't a REbirth, this is a new birth. it is a transformation. it is a claiming of my life as my own. it is time of waiting, and listening to my inner self, in order to grow my own wings and become my own butterfly.

"the greek word for soul is psyche, and is often represented by a butterfly. while it was tempting for me to think that the growth and emergence of my authentic self would happen with little time or effort on my part, that isn't so." SMK

i wanted nothing more than to go back to work. i was going to "cheat" myself and my doctors and go back to work, force myself to suck it up and carry on. not give myself the time that i need. because the GLG knows that going to work and being a productive member of society is important. the BLG was telling me that by staying home and listening to the doctors, i was breaking all the rules that my childhood taught me.

and then i read more of  When the Heart Waits  and came to understand that growing wings takes time. and that being still with myself is important. and this is a luxury. not everyone has the opportunity to take this time for themselves, to heal, to grow, to reflect. i have been given a gift: the gift of a chrysalis. and i can sit here, my gooey self, reflecting, reading, learning, growing, and becoming my authentic self.

"bright wings and works of art don't just happen. they require the courage to let go and spin the chrysalis.[...] wherever there are bright new wings, there's always the husk of waiting somewhere in the corner." SMK

this is scary. this is hard. waiting.

waiting is far from easy. the GLG and the BLG both want to give up. but becoming a butterfly means spinning a cocoon and trusting that you will come out the other side, changed, and with wings that will carry you to new places. strong wings that will allow you to fly, and to soar on the breeze. waiting means trusting. trusting means letting go. and letting go means leaning into the fear.

"we have to be patient. we have to let go and tap our creative stillness. most of all, we have to trust that our scarred hearts really do have wings" SMK
