what's best

today i am celebrating that my blog has had more than 10,000 views - and that doesn't include any of the people who get the posts emailed to them.

10,000 views of things that i have written. little, insignificant me. people from all over the world are visiting my blog.

it is mind-boggling, overwhelming, and humbling.

to celebrate this milestone, i am writing about doing what is best for myself.

it's not easy to do what is best for myself. taking time off work was the most difficult decision i have ever had to make. there has been so much guilt associated with the decision. and it has been the best thing that i ever did for myself. self-care is not valued in our society. self-care is viewed as selfish. i was taught to take care of everyone, to take care of the needs of others, to give and give and give, and not to take. the idea of taking time for myself is so foreign that it feels kind of crazy.

part of the anxiety about taking time for myself comes from wanting to be "better" ... wanting to fast forward to the place and time where i feel strong, and healthy, and happy.

i asked nosy nora if she could wave a magic wand to make me all "better" ...

it is going to take time, unfortunately, for me to get to the place that i want to get to. i am moving forward on my journey. i am much further along than i was a year ago. i am much further along that i was a few months ago. but the only thing that is going to get me to where i want to be is ME

i have also wished for a fast forward button. this kind of work is HARD. and whenever i wish to skip ahead, i am reminded of the lyrics to my favourite song:

"sometimes we ask to take a closer look, skip to the final chapter of the book, and then maybe steer us clear from some of the pain it took, to get us where we are this far. but the question drowns in its futility, and even i have got to laugh at me. no one gets to miss the storm of what will be, just holding on for the ride." - emily saliers

here i am, in what i think is the eye of the storm. things have been quiet and calm lately, but i know that there will be stormy weather before i come out the other side.

this blog has been a life-saver for me. it keeps me grounded. it keeps me afloat. it keeps me focused on what i need to do to get better.

i appreciate all my readers. i appreciate the feedback and support that i receive.

my best advice is to take time for yourself, even if it is 5 minutes a day. give yourself what you deserve, which is time and self-focused energy.

be kind to yourself,

xoxo

enoughness

"Most of us spend our lives protecting ourselves from losses that have already happened."

i have enough, but i am always looking for more.

i do enough, but i am always thinking that i need to do more.

i am enough, but i am always looking to be more.

what is enoughness? well first, it's a word that i made up. and second, enoughness is living your life in the moment. it is living as if what you have, what you do, and what you are, are tantamount to enough.

enoughness is accepting that this moment is the most important moment because it is now. enoughness means not waiting for the right time that will never come.

i want to write about enoughness in relation to food and eating.

my parents grew up with very little. they didn't have enough; not enough food, not enough attention, not enough love. and so they passed on the legacy of not enough to me, even though in reality i have everything i need.

i was given everything i could ever need or want. and i never asked for anything. i didn't need to. there was an abundance of food. it was readily available. i helped with the grocery shopping and got to choose what i wanted to eat. there was always enough.

and yet, it never felt like enough. the not-enough legacy was passed on so that i felt the need to sneak food. to hide food and eat it later. when i tried to go into the kitchen to get food, i was always told "you're not hungry, you're bored." perhaps i was bored and not hungry, but that need wasn't met either. so i stopped looking for food publicly and ate in secret, trying to give myself enough.

this feeling of looking for what i don't have, of wanting something that may not even exist, this feeling of never having enough is a legacy passed down to me from poverty. but it's more than that. i think that our society is obsessed with the idea of more. and more means never having enough.

"...compulsive eating is basically a refusal to be fully alive. No matter what we weigh, those of us who are compulsive eaters have anorexia of the soul. We refuse to take in what sustains us. We live lives of deprivation. And when we can't stand it any longer, we binge. The way we are able to accomplish all of this is by the simple act of bolting -- of leaving ourselves -- hundreds of times a day."

anorexia of the soul ... starving your soul. not feeding your soul what it needs to thrive. the feeling of not BEING enough makes me eat foods that my body doesn't need, in amounts that my body doesn't need so that i can have a false sense of enoughness. i am feeding my need to fill myself without feeding my heart. enoughness means eating when you are hungry, stopping when you are full, and choosing foods that taste good to you. enoughness means feeding your heart and soul with music, friendship, reading good books, writing, walking, gardening, or whatever makes you feel content and enough. when the focus turns to food, the lack of enoughness causes you to overeat.

"We keep wanting more because we don't let ourselves have what we already have" — Geneen Roth

let myself have what i already have ... i have been learning a great deal about kindness. i have been allowing myself to experience kindness without bolting, as well as asking for (demanding) kindness. and most importantly, i have been demanding that i treat mySelf with kindness. it is time to let myself have what i already have - to practice letting myself experience the joys in life that are right here and right now.

"You will never stop wanting more until you allow yourself to have what you already have. To take it in. Savor it. Now is a good time to do that . . ."

taking the time to eat slowly ... to truly taste the foods you eat ... to feel the textures, to know what you like and what you don't like ... this is about allowing yourself to have what you already have. i bought a bag of chocolate easter eggs. i was excited. i peeled the pink shiny foil off the egg and smelled the chocolate. i popped it into my mouth and let the chocolate begin to dissolve. then i bit into the chocolate egg and began to chew ... at which point i discovered that i don't actually like chocolate easter eggs. they are waxy and way too sweet. normally i just pop them in my mouth, chew and swallow, and move onto the next one. enoughness means tasting what you eat and choosing to eat what tastes good. and it also means not wasting time eating things that you discover you don't even like.

when it comes to the enoughness of life, i am working on allowing myself to be treated well. to savor feeling loved. to take in feeling cared about, cherished, treasured. allowing myself to have what is here. and rejecting what doesn't feel good.

merriam webster defines "enough" as "occuring in such quantity, quality, or scope as to fully meet demands, needs, or expectations." the scope of your life, right now, as you are, is enough because it is what you are.

some of you reading this are thinking that this doesn't apply to you because you don't have a job, or you hate your job, or you have an illness, or you are fighting cancer, or your marriage is ending, or you are thinking about moving, or or or ... but i promise you that you are enough, as you are. enoughness means looking past the events and looking into your heart. enoughness is practicing gratitude for the things that make you smile.

right now, in this moment, i am in enoughness because i am writing and drinking a chai tea latte. i am savoring each word i write, and each sip of hot creamy spicy goodness.

enoughness isn't about what you have. enoughness is about living each moment with gusto.

i leave you with this thought:

be kind to yourself,

xoxo

(mis)perceptions and cognitive dissonance

yesterday, LES suggested that i write about the differences between the ways we see ourselves versus the way other people see us.

i see myself in a very negative light. i don't see good things inside of me. i see only darkness. ugliness. stupidity.

WHY ARE WE SO HARD ON OURSELVES? and why do we focus so much on our external appearance (asked Zed)?

if i were to describe myself, and be completely honest ... dear readers, you aren't going to like what i have to say ... i see myself as:

selfish
jealous
ugly
stupid
fat
annoying
clingy
anxious
worthless
undeserving
unlovable
irritating
too much

these are my deeply held beliefs that i have had for as long as i can remember. these are my deeply held beliefs that have been confirmed whenever i was bullied, whenever i was called a name by a stranger on the street, whenever a friend decided not to like me anymore, whenever i was left alone.

so i sent out a message to some friends and asked them to give me 3 words to describe me. it was an exercise in the suspension of disbelief. i had to listen to my friends, who are intelligent and honest people, and try to take in what they were saying despite my complete disagreement with the words that they chose.

here are the words that were given to me as descriptors:

empathetic
self-aware
seeking
kind
observant
smart
approachable
loving
smiling
caring
sensitive
lovely
witty
A GOOD PERSON
sarcastically awesome
thoughtful
insightful
friendly
stubborn
fierce
determined
kind
intelligent
loving
beautiful
strong
brave
voice of an angel
wonderful
thoughtful
talented
fun
adaptive
loyal
caring
sensitive
funny
cute
nice

WOW. people think those things about me. notice that no one commented on my thin hair, my rotund belly, my double chin, my jealousy, my pettiness,or any of the ways that i see myself or think about myself.

so why is that? how is our self-perception determined?

Leon Festinger wrote about cognitive dissonance; the idea of 2 contradictory ideas existing at the same time, causing internal dissonance. He stated:

"the existance of dissonance, being psychologially uncomfortable, will motivate the person to try to reduce the dissonance and achieve consonance." - Festinger

the question becomes, which list will i make myself believe? which list of traits will become the dominant list in my self perception? can both lists exist at once?

my self-harming behaviours are inconsistent with the positive list of traits provided by my friends. my anxiety is inconsistent with the brave traits my friends observe.

here is a video in which women describe themselves and then someone else describes them. it is really interesting. click here for video.

Sam Gosling described self perception by dividing it into parts:

[...] dark spots"—things known by neither you nor others. These could include deep unconscious motives that drive your behaviors, like the fact that your relentless ambition is driven by the need to prove wrong your parents' assumption that you'd never amount to much. [...]
"personal spots"—things known only by you, like your tendency to get anxious in crowds or your contempt for your coworkers.
And finally, there are "blind spots"—things known only by others, which can include such factors as your level of hostility and defensiveness, your attractiveness, and your intelligence.

the question is, how do we morph our self perception with others' perceptions? how do we incorporate the positive traits that are used to describe us by our friends into our self image? i unfortunately do not have an answer. however, i will read over my new list repeatedly and daily, like an affirmation. and if i come up with a theory about how to make myself believe it, i promise to share that theory here.
